Technical Data
The working numbers behind a cedar roof. Use this page to plan your project, then call us at 604-807-6634 — we’ll confirm the exact count for your job before anything ships.
Coverage basics
Roofing is measured in squares: one square covers 100 square feet of roof area at the recommended exposure. How much of each shake or shingle is exposed to the weather — the exposure — is what decides how many bundles a square takes: less exposure means more layers, more bundles, and a thicker, longer-lasting roof.
Exposure, in plain terms
Exposure is set by the product’s length and the roof’s slope, following the grading rules of the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau. Steeper roofs can run a longer exposure; lower slopes need a shorter one. If you’re unsure which applies to your roof, ask us — it’s the single most important number in the order.
Grades, simply put
Premium grade is 100% edge grain and 100% clear heartwood. Number 1 allows a small share of flat grain. Edge grain is what resists cupping and splitting, which is why grade matters more than almost anything else in how a cedar roof ages.
Before you order
Send us the roof area (or the plans), the product, and the grade you’re considering. We’ll work out the bundle count — including hip and ridge — and quote it delivered, anywhere in the world.
